John Deere is laying off 238 workers at three factories in Iowa. The company said Tariffs and lower commodity prices are to blame.

“Tariff costs in the quarter were approximately $200 million, which brings us to roughly $300 million in tariff expense year to date,” said director

"I haven't had a single business person or individual in my state come up to me and say the tariffs are a good idea," says Paul.

The senator from Kentucky appeared on Rising, the news show I host for The Hill, on Wednesday to discuss Trump's tariffs threats, the firings of federal workers, and why so many of his Republican colleagues refuse to do the tough work of actually cutting government spending.

He was particularly outspoken on how tariffs will negatively impact businesses in his home state.

"I have had people come up—farmers which are a big presence in our state—and say they export 20 to 25 percent of their products and this will hurt them," says Paul. "They are still suffering from some of the tariffs and retaliation from 2018 and 2019, when the previous Trump administration did tariffs," Paul said. "I have home builders and real estate brokers who say if the price of lumber goes up, if the price of steel goes up, the prices of homes will go up and we'll sell less homes. I have the bourbon distillers coming to me, which is a big industry in my state, and they say due to the retaliation that Europe is placing on us and Canada is placing on our bourbon, we will export less bourbon. We have shippers in our state, people who ship internationally as well as across the U.S."

This is them laying off employees because they've spent the last many years shifting production to other countries. When I was last there they shifted the entire 6000 series to Germany and were in the process of shifting portions of the 7000 series to Mexico to which they just in the last 2 years shifted the entire cab build to Mexico they pretty much used the same cab build for the 6,7,8,9000 series tractor built in Iowa. Somehow having those cabs built literally in the same building attached by overhead monorail as the 7,8,9000 tractors it was cheaper for them to shift the production of the cabs to Mexico, paying freight and all to send them up to Iowa to be put on the tractor.
Each of these layoffs blamed on tarrifs were because of already planned moves to new factories in other countries but this doesn't make them look bad.
I partially dont blame them because the UAW has made it impossible for them to even automate simple braindead robot tasks with robots so you have to employ an FTE to drive a cart up and down a hallway all day @100/hr cost

John Deere has been trash since the late 90s. I've been keeping my old 88 JD running and so far it's been basic stuff but eventually this thing has to die. It mows every week in the summer and blows snow all winter. I've repainted it twice, replaced tires twice, sharpened and replaced countless blades, and welded up holes in the mower deck multiple times. I'd rather pay some methed out redneck to keep this fucker running than give modern JD a fucking dime.

It's the same situation across the board, not just with farming.

E.g., The government is beholden to big defense contractors (Boeing, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, General Dynamics, and Lockheed Martin), who are "approved" and the only ones enabled to do maintenance on hardware, and who charge egregious sums for parts. Their business model depends on cost-plus accounting (cost + mark up), they are incentivised to raise their price every year, and they employ armies of lawyers and lobbyists to change laws for their benefit, making Congress appropriate too much money to the Pentagon that spends it on the big manufacturers.

Down here, all the parts for military hardware have to come from any one of the big 5 defence contractors via the US. We can't even source parts here for maintenance.

It's the same with farming equipment. My neighbour's John Deere tractor broke down only for JD to send out a repair crew who couldn't even fix the issue. But I somehow fixed whatever the fuck was wrong with it after they left.

Fuck the free market. These big manufactures need to have their management culled and the remaining staff put on a very tight leash by the state, and if they want to fuck around then their families can be collected by SF teams and taken to black sites. Western countries have strategic interests that are not bound by the fickle accounting of over-grown businesses who can't see the forest for the trees, let alone from the context of the country they are based in. Fuck their excuses, it's their own fault for not being able to function without the Third World and subsequently pay White employees right.

We need open source equipment (tractors etc.) with parts sourced from the given country so they are repairable in the field and without hermetically sealed maintenance crews via the manufacturer.
Allow competitive bidding for the maintenance of these platforms. Give the design files to SMEs and allow them to 3D print most of the components.

You ship bauxite in, in bulk ore haulers.
Canada has effectively "two" aluminum smelters. One huge one in BC in Kitimat because the aluminum company build a 900MW hydro plant to run the smelter.
The other are like 30 small smelters in Quebec that get train and small lake class boat deliveries. Basically they get free electrical power from Newfoundland, like less than 1 cent per kilowatt hour cheap.

Kitimat is a deep sea port and takes in some massive bulk haulers. Canada produces zero bauxite.
My friend's Dad was the plant manager back in the 90s.

Bauxite is dirt cheap. 95% the cost comes in the processing and refining, with an huge electrical demand being most of it.
If you had almost free electrical power and access to shipping you can cost effectively refine aluminum. If you don't you can't.

>95% of the cost
It's a bit more than that, it's up to 15% of the cost, but it really doesn't matter as it's illustrative. There's nothing really competitive versus China or Canada here. Tariffs make the imported bauxite-refining cost more expensive. Tariffs increase the cost of this "domestic" product that we don't really have any notable reserves of.

>The U.S. would also need much more and cheaper electricity. Alcoa says producers would need firm contractual energy-price commitments of about $30 per megawatt hour for at least 15 years to be globally competitive. Manufacturers in the U.S. typically pay from $60 to $100 per megawatt hour.

Most summers, the difference between finishing work on the field, and having some kind of crop reduction, is 8 to 10 hours all together in a 2 week window where the ground is dry enough to handle the weight.
And these things can break down in the garage, but most of the time they'll break down in the middle of your crops, and then you have to figure out how to tow them off your crops without damage, load them, move them multiple miles with dumb bitches all over the place, only to have the dealership overloaded with work that you could have done in your field in 2 hours.
