According to chatGPT the average annual cost to host everything for a facebook user is under 10 dollars. Easily supportable with only non-targeted or randomized ads, or a miniscule subscription fee. Or even just something a state could subsidize so people can have access to a non-invasive non-algorithm social media site.

Of course in practice they'd be forced to collect the data and sell it anyway, but the point is that it wouldn't be hard to make one that didn't do that. It would just be immediately attacked by existing big data or intelligence agencies until it was ruined.

This is the way. We need online communication to be given the same level of availability and government support as the post office has for paper mail. A recognition that online communication is necessary to function in modern day personal and business activity, and to provide an open forum of communication that needs no funding other than your taxes to operate at cost instead of as a return on investment.

Weirdly, despite being government run this would actually result in a LESS censored platform than most existing social media. Freedom of Speech protects you from censorship *by the government*, so a government-run platform has to allow freedom of speech. But Twitter and Facebook don't actually have to follow freedom of speech, they are private enterprises not the government, so they can censor whatever they want/their users allow them to get away with.

I'm not saying that government run social media platforms should be the only game in town, but they should exist as an option. Because just by existing they create a mediating force on the bullshit that other platforms can get away with in comparison.
