This is how modern reddit was created.

This is hard to believe and very few people will remember it, but reddit used to be a free speech site similar to 4chan. It was one of its founding principles, but the founding member pushing for free speech (and responsible for most of the tech) was prosecuting under federal law for downloading an academic journal he wasn't allowed to... or something... and then he killed himself apparently.

Modern reddit is the result of extreme moderation and bannings that drove most of their old users away, and discouraged any continuing users from telling the truth. It's now close to dead, limping on with a few higher activity leftist echo chambers, and some smaller communities that have yet to be censored out of existence.

The completely insane moment was banning the subreddit for the sitting US President. I am no Trump fan, but The_Donald did nothing wrong. They broke no laws, and they broke no rules. They were literally just banned for being popular and it was infuriating to the left wing people running the company. Many similar bans followed until the original reddit was totally dead.
