weight and balance is critical for ensuring safe flight characteristics. if the aircraft's center of gravity is an inch outside of where it's designed to be, it is no longer safe. an overweight passenger with an additional person in the seat next to them could put the entire flight in jeopardy. ergo, that seat must be left empty and to be fair to those who put in the effort to remain healthy, they shouldn't have to offset the cost of an empty seat.
a fat tax is really the only one i would support.
