FF8 would've been considered the best. Fucking junction system threw off normies, cut scenes with gf were excessive, and real time play is more fun. These things killed it

Will fuck off already. It's been 20 plus years. Leon has stood the test of time. Kingdom Hearts ripped off him so bad they just put him in the franchise. Every FF has ripoff of the aesthetics even that FF7 remake.

What was the whole point of the intro fight between squall and seifer?
The entire thing was set up with dramatic music and cinematography and shit but it's only purpose was so that both could end up with identical scars in just the perfect location so as to be "cool" but not disfiguring. Then it's dropped and is of no importance whatsoever.
It would have been better if squall ended up with a big dent in his head and asymmetrical ogre features, and seifer got his nose chopped off, but FF doesn't have the balls

This is the short answer.
The truth was they didn't. FF8 was a huge step forward. The problems listed above were definitely a factor but the hate came from butt hurt webs that thought they were getting FF7 story part 2. Spammed negative comments online, then all the game news articles being obsequious to the readers, because they were (subscription-based) and New thing that desperately needed money and would hound kids for cash, did a bunch of negative articles and negative rankings of the game.
