A patient can not give a diagnosis. Only a doctor can.
I can go to a doctor tomorrow and say that I am struggling with sexual intimacy because I have a small penis. The doctor is the one that has to make the call as to whether I am delusional, a retard that thinks doctors have access to pills that make your dick bigger, or actually have a micropenis. His treatment then follows after that determination is made.
A good doctor knows that a below average penis does not require invasive surgery to correct. Some people are just destined to be below average.
But this approach is rarely taken in the realm of psychiatry, where almost every conceivable undesirable mental trait can be found listed as a symptom in a mental disorder for which, of course, there is some kind of medication to be prescribed.
Psychiatry seems to operate on the basis that if you believe something is wrong with you, then there must be something wrong with you. It couldn't possibly be that you are just insecure or holding yourself to expectations beyond your natural capacity. No where is this more evident than with ADHD.
And by the way, the majority of ADHD diagnoses still occur during childhood, where it is not the patient seeking remedy but rather the parents, often on the advice of the school. There are so many reasons this is fucked up that I won't list them all, but provable increase in illicit substance abuse in medicated children with ADHD versus ADHD kids who do not recieving medication should be enough to tell you how retarded this whole situation is.
