In olden times, if you were born the son of a peasant, you were expected to be a peasant, farm crops and never worried about your choices, because they were already made for you. The most common last names are usually professions that transferred between generations - smiths, butchers, millers etc.
Nowadays, everyone is expected to rise above the level of their parents, and when that fails to happen for what ever reason, not only are your parents disappointed in you, you yourself are driven to depression.
Perhaps, feudalism wasn't such a bad social order after all?

Boomers could try out 80 different jobs and still afford to pay rent by doing odd jobs between the official ones until they found where they belonged.

To be able to do that today you need a wealthy boomer relative to fund it for you, or gen X parents who love you. If you have neither good luck ever owning a house and if you lose your job and miss one paycheck good luck paying the 1k rent wagie.

Would you believe me if I told you that you summarized my current situation?
I work 45-50 hours a week and make barely enough to cover my rent and car expenses, which I need to get to work. My parents do love me but leeching off them in my 30's is no longer tolerable. I visit them once a week for free food but that's all I'm willing to take, even if they offer more.

Social mobility has actually been remarkably consistent through history and it's a myth we have greater social mobility today.

What there was in the olden days was much more pressure downwards. Basically, the poor failed to reproduce themselves and were typically replaced by the less successful members of the upper classes, it was lopsided to social mobility incrementally downwards.

But it's a myth that peasants had to remain peasants. Peasants often had successful kids that became tradesmen or merchants, merchants often could amass wealth and buy a title or marry into nobility.
