Speaking anecdotally, there were four of us in my family.

My older sister had two kids, but she and her husband were in a degenerate open marriage and weren't very careful so they're both riddled with STDs resulting in her getting a hysterectomy. So, they ended at two.

My younger sister fell for a guy who was sterile. She desperately wanted to be a mother, and copes with her maternal longing by having five hundred cats. She calls them her children.

My younger brother married his highschool sweetheart the day he turned 18, pissing our parents off. They had a kid about a year later. She was already a bit of a town slut and eventually left him for someone else. But he had one-itis and refused to go back in the dating world. So, he ended at one.

My wife and I have had five pregnancies, and we're still trying for more. We decided we'd just keep having as many as we could until she hits menopause.

Modern economies have made consumer goods and services cheap but the cost of children basically scales with your lifestyle and if anything they're more expensive now because there's no real household work for them to do anymore. A modern 30y/o DINK couple have a whole world of luxury experiences their ~200k combined income (more advantageous than a single 200k income because of progressive tax brackets btw). But for them a child is just as daunting of a financial and time commitment as it is for a couple with half their income or less.
Basically it's not about being able to afford kids, but about all the other shit you could afford instead.
