People who complain about groceries are buying processed goyslop at $8/item and wondering why their grocery bills are high. My wife and I spend $300 every 2 weeks for a family of 4. We strictly buy meat(Ground beef, steak, chicken thighs, shrimp, bacon), a lot of veggies, rice, bread, lunch meat, cheese, eggs, milk, herbs/spices, stir fry sauce, 2 bags of oil-free, low sodium potato chips for snacking. We make a lot of stir fry and other home cooked meals for dinner. Lunch consists of sandwiches or skipping to fast. I cook mostly on my Blackstone grill.
The key to saving money is to watch and ask about the best days for sales on meat. When meat items are not selling, your grocery store will put them on sale for usually half off normal prices. I get bags of shrimp when they're buy one get one or buy one get one 40-50% off then I stock up on it and store it in our chest freezer. Something we want to start doing next year is to get another chest freezer and buy a half cow from a local farm and have a butcher cut the meat for storing.
Dinners for us consist of stir fry served over rice, or a meat main entre with 2 sides; 1 vegetable(green beans, asparagus, broccoli steamed, etc), 1 filler(homemade mashed potatoes and gravy, fries, tater tots, rice, cut redskin potatoes, etc)
We avoid "fat free" items because they're substituted with added chemicals, prepackaged meals not prepacked at the local grocery store. We also prefer low-sodium(salt) items such as canned vegetables and unsalted butter.
Also we skip breakfast, sometimes my wife makes bagel breakfast egg bacon cheese sandwiches
