Invention of the moveable type printing press in the 1450's. Before that mapmakers would see some maps and then draw a map of a different place eyeballing it. When there were standardized books on cartography on bookshelves all over Western Europe then any learned man could create accurate maps that got better and more refined with time.
That happened with thousands of other fields as well. Guttenberg literally enabled the modern world.

Anyone who ever grew up in this city has at some point. We went there many times while in daycare and in school. Back in the early 2000s there were waaaay less foreigners. This place used to be comfyness deluxe. I genuinely feel bad for the new generations that get to grow up in NuSweden.

Besides the migrants I'm really fond of it. Lots of history. Small enough to be walkable. Very pretty to look at especially around the centre by the riber. Lots of great pubs. A great deal of culture and the fact that a rough quarter of the population are students makes the city feel very youthful.

They used a different form of map making back in mideval times. It was a point to point one dimensional system of roads like the Roman's. At some point during the 14th century when people started to use celestial navigation for sea fairing they transitioned to two dimensional maps and planning. They had small rudimentary maps before then for construction but nothing large. It wasn't until large scale projects where performed that interest in accuracy was made.

The travel maps were simply measuring the mileage from one stop to the next. In the case of rome they would usually calculate up and find the distance from Rome at every stop and mile marker.

Up until the late 14th century all maps were largely just holdovers from ancient Roman census, maybe updated on a small scale from city to city with little interest of what laid on either side of the road.

>The travel maps were simply measuring the mileage from one stop to the next.
I remember hearing about this and thinking it was so odd at first, but its really the same thing we now on mapquest where it generates a bullet point list of turns and such. Just back then they only had main roads and inns ever so many miles so a straight list of town names with mile markers makes a lot of sense if you're traveling in a straight line with a caravan of people.

That Odin was a man is not found anywhere but in Christian sources.
It's said that there was a big heathen temple in Uppsala before Christianity, but we don't know.
There are no Old Swedish sources on heathendom, probably because the Danmark-Norway destroyed the Swedish archives in some war.
We can see form place-names and runestones that Sweden was heathen and shared culture with Denmark and Norway, but the sources are gone.

It wasn't the characters it was the paper they used shitty rice paper. It would literally dissolve in a press. They also just didn't use lead printing blocks and instead used wood. It worked for printing simple wood cuts a couple of times but didn't hold up to thousands of presses. Lead and steel presses mixed with paper made from heavier wood pulp was the way to go.
