Which is why I specify that you need to define by what standard. In principle the government should be no bigger than what is necessary, what is necessary? Is it enough to enforce the most basic of rights so that you stop murderers, rapists, people of that sort, or do you need more to enforce social order so it doesn't become a degenerate economic zone for rent, which I'm arguing.

You may be right, but I do not live under the delusion that the government is or ever has been made of a finer clay than the rest of mankind. Human nature being what it is, I do not trust anyone, no matter how white, intelligent or even virtuous, to rule me without strict limits and accountability, because the only thing worse than a maniacal evil tyrant is tyranny imposed for our own good. An evil tyrant's gluttony or bloodlust may at times be sated, but those who oppress us for our own good do so without rest, for they have the blessing of their own consciousness.

The relative importance of both is exactly what's up for debate here. All morality is ultimately subjective (if you want to start a debate about this, please have something better prepared than "buttsex is objectively wrong because I say so"). The closest thing we have to objective morality is the moral opinions that are generally shared within a given society (this is what I meant when I said "common morality" earlier). Funny thing about how you're talking about gays in particular; homosexuality used to be widely frowned upon, and this was a social order that persisted even with very little imposition from the government, it was ultimately the government that came in, invented the concept of "hate crimes", imposed legal protections for fags and all that.
