Los Angeles, California — On July 13, 2025, around 9:10 a.m., Central Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call of an ADW suspect in the area of South Figueroa Street and West Olympic Boulevard. The comments of the call indicated that a male suspect stopped his vehicle in the middle of the intersection, exited, and was swinging a sword at pedestrians. Upon arrival, officers observed the suspect, later identified as 36-year-old Gurpreet Singh, standing in the intersection holding a machete. Officers gave multiple commands for Singh to drop the weapon; however, he failed to comply. Singh then returned to his vehicle, retrieved a water bottle, and threw it at the officers.

He subsequently entered his vehicle and fled southbound on Figueroa Street while waving the machete outside the driver’s side window. Officers initiated a brief vehicle pursuit during which Singh drove erratically and collided with an officer’s vehicle. A short time later, Singh stopped near Figueroa Street and 12th Street, exited his vehicle while still armed with the machete, and charged at the officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS). Singh was struck by gunfire and fell to the pavement. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded and transported Singh to a local hospital for medical treatment. A machete, two feet in length, was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence. No officers or community members were injured during the incident.

In Chinese, names usually have three characters, the first character is the family name, the second and third character is the given name. Some people have four character names, their family names hve two characters instead of just one. Koreans and Japanese also have their family names placed ahead of their given name. With Japanese, it seem they are more like the English but in reverse, with their friends they just use their given names. With Chinese, it would often be strange to just use the given name without the family name ahead of it, as the three characters is considered to form one name. Bruce Lee's Chinese name is "Lee Little Dragon" 李小龍,, they wouldn't just call him Little Dragon" without the Lee prefix.

It is probably a reflection of how individualistic Europeans / Americans / Westerners typically are, that their given name is placed before their family name, in America and Canada many people just go by their given name, and you might not even know your co-worker's family name.
