Right now, users have the tools to avoid the surveillance state. That's why they are coming down hard all at once (at least in certain countries) in already heavily demoralized countries. I suspect COVID was the test bed for compliance. They are trying to take away the most basic tools. First they attempted censoring the information. Algorithm manipulation, false sentiment (mass bot nets, removal of dislikes). Now, they are going after the privacy things - KYC, VPNs. Simultaneously, you have the big tech monopolies like Google now stating they are going to prevent sideloading apps from non-verified developers.

Current encryption and the like still poses a threat, hence why they are trying to outlaw it entirely or require a backdoor that they can decode (effectively making it useless). Self-hosting and decentralization are the most effective weapons. Governments won't try to control everything. They will just control the main access points. They'll control the main companies, finance, cloud hosting providers. Like with crypto - they don't try to track every transaction - they go after exchanges.

The main risk is that these changes are rolled out slowly in populations that would react vehemently against this (like in the US). Most users are unaffected by stuff like the Youtube AI age verification rolled out now. The newer generations who aren't nearly as tech savvy are being born into this increasingly controlled sphere. They know no better, unless their parents show them. The generational gap poses the greatest risk to failure here. Millenials and older gen Z types existed at a strange point technologically where they saw the vast transition from analog to digital, and the rapid rise of the Internet and now-increasing centralization.
