All the dogs that my parents had when I was growing up, and the dogs that my brother had all got tumors, sometimes benign and sometimes resulting in terminal cancer. All those dogs were neutered, they could never retain muscle mass, put on fat. My intact dog has never had a tumor or any illness. Maybe it's premature to make the call, but animals evolved to grow up with all of their hormones, including endocrine hormones that they get from their reproductive organs. Depriving them of bodily organs does have second-order effects on their health.

Wait until your dog is at least a year old if it's male. You want them to benefit from the positives of testosterone production until they hit sexual maturity. Neutering them after that window will reduce aggressive tendencies and prevent you from having to rehome half a dozen puppies when your neighbors dog goes into heat and that dumb fucker breaks down your fence to get at her. Other minor benefits do include longer lifespan and less potential for health complications like cancer.
If you want a more aggressive dog for protecting your home or person, yeah, leave them intact. Same goes for task oriented breeds that you plan on putting to work. You'd be an idiot to cut the balls off your bird dog.

My female dog is about 4, not spayed. Only real downside is the heat cycles and her leaving drips of blood around the house. Not a huge deal since it's like twice a year but kind of annoying.
