The general message of the film is "racism bad".
The main character of the film befriends a mulatto and they get rich. There's a subplot told through flashbacks where a white women falls in love with a black man and the town hangs him. Then the town is forever cursed with a drought for being racist.
The movie also had its own original gay hiphop song that was used as its theme.
All of it was just another attempt to get children to relax around blacks. Needless to say, we were made to read the book and watch the movie in grade school.

We only got to watch poorly hand-recorded videos of local theater productions of Shakespeare from the 80s.
The ONE time we were allowed to watch a movie the guy who "won" the ability to bring in a movie for the class to watch brought in Half-Baked and the teacher turned it off after like 8 minutes and made us sit with out heads down on our desks for the next hour.
I liked Holes as a kid, it was way better than most movies they would play on The Wonderful World of Disney once a week (we only had 4 channels and one was French garbage).
