They're very too faced about it. When they want to sell the narrative of lawless cities where bloodshed is common, they'll include every gang shooting. When someone asks for an ethnic breakdown of those shootings, they'll then redefine what a mass shooting is, so a certain group isn't demonized.
That's how you get some headlines saying there are hundreds of shootings per year vs. this chart saying there were 155 in 43 years. The funniest part is that it still shows kangs as being slightly overrepresented and whites as being slightly underrepresented (the article that chart comes from hilarious says to ignore that conclusion). It would probably be even worse if you cut that data off to just this millennium or something. What was the racial makeup of the U.S. in 1982 vs. 2025? Probably a lot whiter, so I'd assume mass shooting stats would be, too.
