My attempt to read the Bible.

Methodology:
-- Reading through the NIV, so I understand the broad strokes
-- Do a second pass with the KJV to get the "true translation"
-- Refer to the Cambridge Bible Commentary, and see if they have any useful analysis

Starting with Genesis 1, I immediately noticed a discrepancy.
God creates the "heaven and the Earth" in verse 1. But later on, he creates the Firmament and names it "heaven". The NIV cheats here, using the word "sky" in the second case.
I was intrigued by this, and wanted to understand it better. I looked up the actual Hebrew translation, and the word is the same in each instance. The word is "Shamayim" Χ©ΧžΧ™Χ™Χ.

Using the cambridge Bible commentary, I learned that ancient Hebrews believed the "firmament" was a large glass dome over the sky. Above this dome was a tremendous quantity of water, which leaked through cracks in the dome, explaining the rain and the dew. You can see in Genesis 1 how this transpires.
>verse 2: the entire world is nothing but a ball of water
>verse 6-8: god spawns the firmament into the middle of this water, and uses it to lift a portion of the water high up, explaining why the sky is blue
I also found a note mentioning the word for "seas" was ΧžΧ™Χ™Χ. My eyes went wide, as I noticed that this was *very similar* to the word Shamayim Χ©ΧžΧ™Χ™Χ. The difference is the character "Χ©" which means "there" or "place".

I went to /pol/ and asked 4 different Hebrew speakers about this. They were actually shocked when I pointed this out, it was something they never noticed before. They said that adjoining the words "seas" and "place" had the effect of saying "the water in a high place" or "the water far away".
In other words, the word "heaven" in the Bible, LITERALLY means "the water over the sky dome".
In other words, there is no mystical, ethereal plane called "heaven" in the Old Testament. It doesn't exist. In fact, that is a neoplatanoist idea that was added in with the New Testament

>why aren't you reading this right now?
I am. Just finished gospels of John and Luke. I am new to this and trying to figure out what makes sense to me. It does however seem clear there is a great spiritual war happening, designed to severe the connections between self, nature and creator. The stakes are high. It's a battle for our souls. Whether you subscribe to these ideas or not, we must find ways to defend ourselves. Something interesting I just recently covered. While on a mission to save sinners, had some scathing words for lawyers that really spoke to me:

*first speaking to Pharisees, (fake jewish elder priests that turned away from god), then turning his attention to a lawyer sitting at the table

[Lawyers as well, WOE TO YOU, (used in this context, this statement is a prophetic warning), for you weight men down with burdens hard to bear; while you yourself will not even touch the burden. WOE TO YOU for you build the tombs of prophets and it was your father's who killed them. WOE TO YOU Lawyers for you have taken forbidden knowledge, you yourself did not enter, but you hindered those who were entering".

Luke 11:46

I am still investigating but the more I read, Jesus sounds like my type of guy; a peaceful Libertarian that underscored the importance of free will and the right to choose your own path but also always pushed people around him to do the right thing or at least consider consequences. Cheers buderino

Forgot to add this detail. I am reading the MacArthur study Bible, which was a thoughtful gift from a friend. It's highly recommended for several reasons. It's written in more of a modern vernacular so I find it's easier to read. 1/2 to 2/3rd of the page down below the scripture are explanations of the locations and all the biblical meaning of words. So if you come across something you don't quite understand you can stop and immediately learn more about the context.

Most the higher concepts in Christianity were stolen/borrowed from Zoroastrianism and Greek philosophy. Strip Christianity and even Judaism of its borrowed Greek and Persian elements and what you're left with is a very crude Semite mythology designed to justify rule by a jealous and hateful priesthood.

I just read Sousana, and the Prayer of Manasses. Learning to read Greek. Christ is King. The fact that 95% of all Bibles in the West use the (((masoretic text))) is akin to building a house upon sand. Christ and the New Testament writers get their sauce from the LXX (Septuagint). I think you are right. That actually sparked an interest in Neoplatonism for me.
It really appealed to me, because it's an abstract means of describing the scientific thought process. When science imposes a concept onto the world, it's almost like he's summoning an Archon from the metaphysical plane and imposing its logic onto our reality.
I really liked it. But it's kind of dry, I don't know how useful it is in animating the masses.

The neoplatonists basically hated the idea of a religion based on stories of people doing unrealistic things. But of course that is exactly how you animate people.

>I really liked it. But it's kind of dry, I don't know how useful it is in animating the masses.

An ideal religion would have both a higher and lower form. You need a simplified version for plebs in order to provide them with moral instruction and to provide ritual framework to their lives. You also need the higher form to engage and enlighten the intelligent minority.

Christianity falls short in this because there is only the complex version of the religion, but it's convoluted and not particularly well thought out. The less intelligent and theologically inclined plebs are confused by many of Christianity's concepts and unintentionally embrace all sorts of minor heresies. This is in part intentional because it gives priests an excuse to chastise dumb plebs for their theological foulups and instill extra guilt and thus gain just that little bit more power of them. Priestly abuses are a good part of why Christianity is a dying religion and led directly to the Protestant reformation, which was the single biggest disaster for Christendom.

If you want a "lower form" look no further than Norse Paganism. That is pure, raw emotion.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYKW8otERPk

I wonder if you can infuse Neoplatonism into it. Or just let them be separate and have one religion for the masses and one for the intellectuals.
