For more than two decades, Kolsum Akbari was able to get away with systematically marrying elderly men before poisoning them with diabetes drugs and industrial alcohol so she could inherit their possessions and dowries. She wed a much older man with children from a previous marriage who constantly beat and humiliated her. It was after her second husband’s death that her killing spree began. Soon after marrying her victims, Kolsum started poisoning them with a dangerous mix of blood pressure medications, diabetes drugs, sedatives, and industrial alcohol, and when that didn’t prove lethal, she used pillows to suffocate them before moving on to another target. Because the killings occurred in different cities across Iran’s Mazandaran province, authorities never traced them back to her.

69-year-old Mirahmad Omrani died a month after marrying Akbari in 2013, Esmail Bakhshi, 62, died two months after their 2016 wedding, and 83-year-old Ganjali Hamzei died 43 days after marrying the serial killer. Interestingly, one of the woman’s husbands, Masih Nemati, survived her poisoning attempt in 202, but he just kicked her out of his house without bothering to call the police.

Akbari’s killing spree finally came to an end in 2023, soon after the death of her last husband, 82-year-old Gholamreza Babaei, when his son became suspicious of her. A friend told him that his own father had previously been married to a woman named Kolsum who had tried to poison him, and when he saw this widow, he recognized her as the same person. Although she initially denied the killings, the 56-year-old woman eventually confessed, but continues to give conflicting accounts as to the number of victims.

The indictment against Kolsum Akbari includes 11 counts of premeditated murder and one count of attempted murder, and if found guilty, she risks the death penalty. The case involves more than 45 plaintiffs, including heirs of her many victims who want to see justice done. Prosecutors say she was motivated by a desire to inherit her husbands’ property and money, most of which was transferred to Kolsum’s daughter’s name.
The court is expected to issue a verdict after all the plaintiffs have been heard.
