About the italian armed forces in WW2, the thing is more complex.
Long story short, there was a plethora of generals and admirals who turned the armed forces in a daycare for them and their fellow freemasons.
They were "loyal" to the King while they got money from Mussolini.
When the King decided to turn himself to the allies they were with him.

Hitler stated (correctly) that Germany coudn't win a 2 fronts war. What he didn't consider (and this is probably Goering's fault) is that the allies could create serious problem to the german industry simply by using bombers.
If the british island were in german hands no bomber could have reached Germany. U-Boot could have a easier job in hunting convoys for Russia since they could have leaved unbothered and assisted by reconnaissance planes.
Finally, the fighters and air defence used in the unsuccessful defence of german industries could had been used on the eastern front.
With the occupation of England the British Empire could have crumbled and you had no need to assit our forced in the Mediterran also because Spain could have joined too at that point.
