Engels and marx, predicted the way to communism, was through capitalism. They predicted that capitalism had to reach max height, hyper capitalism if you will. Before its exploitative and societal effects were damaging enough to cause the people to demand more and more social reforms. As capitalism can only go up, and we live in finite space, initial socialist policies will momentarily quell uprisings and prevent complete collapse caused by capitalism. Gradually those socialist policies would creep in more and more till theyve replaced capitalist system entirely. Then you have communism. Russia (the USSR, stalin) attempted to bypass this by skipping the late stage capitalism / early socialism phases, and going straight into communism via revolution. Engels and marx could of predicted it to fail, which it inevitably did, but to many it also succeeded in a way no one thought would happen. Despite skipping maximal capitalist stages, they did surprisingly well. USSR went from third world poverty to top competitor with the worlds super power (the USA). They inevitably collapsed just as fast though. I believe China learned from Russia, and attempted a middle ground between suffering through capitalism (as engels and marx predicted) and jumping right into communism (as the USSR did). To achieve this, they opened China up to capitalism. This created their 2 system one cuntry design of Hong Kong and others. Over time they have been systematically phasing out capitalist aspects for greater communist goals. So far they experience a similar effect that the USSR did, by injecting communism it brought China from a third world to a leading competitor with the world super power (the USA) in a very short time period. The key to their success lasting will be based on if they achieved maximal capitalism to sustain a fully communist state. I predict the answer is no.
