Did nobody find the messianic imagery of Obama to be...sort of bizarre, at the time? People talk about how 2020/George Floyd made white liberals insane, but in 2008 they were treating Obama as if he was a religious figure sent from God to course correct the world.

The right wing literally sent from God thing is boring and has existed for a long time. Obama was actually unique in the sense a cult of personality formed around him to the poijt where he became a living deity. The interesting part is that it was yuppie, David Axelrod focus grouped secular fanatics who wept at Obama speeches in 2008. It was divorced completely from God but a deeply religious veneration.

After Obama was elected, the “post-racial” society we were promised did not emerge. If anything, things got more racial. Instead of everyone getting over race, they grew increasingly obsessed with the topic. People aren’t celebrating differences, they’re highlighting them. Instead of harmony, we have endless infantile pissing matches over status and hierarchy and the depressingly persistent primitive religious notion of historical collective guilt.
