The part this doesn't address (because people do not generally comprehend this) is that without a doctor's notice you don't get shit.
You can't just "call in sick" and get a payed day or heck, even a justified absence.
Meanwhile in America, sure they don't got an OFFICIAL coverage, and most filthy corpo scum are gonna take advantage of that. But if you work a local business or something and you call your boss in sick, and you're generally a good lad about it, your boss isn't going to slam you over it unless he's a dick himself.
That's the difference here. It's the forced camaraderie vs genuine camaraderie.
Of course all this requires the people you work with and for are all dedicated or at least responsible, which most of the times in corpo hell (which is most American jobs) just isn't the case. The social contract is, at this point, held together by the fear of reprisals both economic and violent, and that applies to work as well.
