I wasn't able to post this essay in the other thread. Someone suggested he posts here.

When he drops a meme, I'll think he does post here.
Here is one for him. When I was in college, I took a Japanese history class. Most of it is what you'd expect, shoguns, feudalism, etc. She did drop one gem that blows my mind to this day. She said that Western culture is one that assumes everyone should be treated equally, especially your own children. You don't give one a shiny new bike for Chistmas and the others a $20 toy from Wallmart. In Japan, that is NOT the case. The oldest child is treated better, but is also given more responsibilities. All the students said, "Hmm" to that.
But the real eye opener is when she said, "It takes a very unusual person to be able to take a step back from their own society and look at it objectively. Each child growing up in their own society would either accept equality as what's right, or accept favoritism as what's right. But it would be rare for someone in Japan to advocate for equality, and for an American child (not the first-born) to advocate for favored treatment.
So, then she gave the metaphor of a fish living in water. It's all around the fish, and they don't even realize they are living in water. To a fish, we'd be the creatures that do best living in air. But, the point is that when you are surrounded by something, like a fish is surrounded by water, or a cultural norm that you grew up in, you don't even realize it, and it takes a special person to say for the first time, "Hey guys, we are living in air!", or in social terms, for the first time someone said that our cultural norms demand that every child gets treated equally.
Anyway, I just have to say this Chinese guy is like the fish who wants to tell his fellow fish, "Hey guys, did you ever notice we are living in water?"
Picrel is attention grabbing so you read the post.
