I don't think we'll have it here in the U.S. but the future will be pilot free drones that fly you to your destination. We might have some commercial version of that where you go to like a station to and pay a fee to use a drone to fly you from one station to another. I think the significance of this in America is underappreciated by Euros that understand the population density problem in abstract, but don't fully grasp how big the US really is and how much it varies. Even extremely rural and remote areas are pretty well-connected by air. You can eat lunch in a Michelin starred restaurant in NYC/LA/etc, hop on a couple of planes and maybe drive an hour or two, and eat a greasy burger for dinner at the one restaurant in a tiny town in Montana. Or a tiny mountain town in Colorado, or a grimier tiny mountain town in West Virginia. Or eat on the plane and still spend the next day on the Alaskan tundra or a Hawaiian beach.

The cost would be astronomical to make it happen with high speed rail. The US is nothing like a country in Europe with just a handful of major metropolitan areas. Anything remotely affordable and realistic would basically just connect the major Northeastern cities, or maybe coastal cities more generally if you get really ambitious. Most of the country would be bypassed completely, and the people living in those places don't see the point in funding it. Air travel makes much more sense in the US, it's just a reality in opposition to the Euro fetish for trains.
