Deal possible on Ukraine security guarantees, Putin says
An agreement might be reached on security guarantees for Ukraine as discussed with US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated on Tuesday in remarks to Russia's state news agency TASS.
Putin made the comments during a meeting in Beijing with Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, TASS reported. The Russian leader is currently on a four-day visit to China where he, like Fico, plans to attend a military parade on Wednesday to mark the end of World War II 80 years ago.
"It seems to me that there is an opportunity to find consensus," Putin said regarding potential security guarantees for Ukraine, a highly contentious issue that is currently being discussed by Kiev's allies to deter Moscow from attacking again should a peace deal be reached.
Trump invited Putin to a summit in Alaska last month in an attempt to end the war in Ukraine that started with Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022. Despite optimistic remarks from Trump following the meeting in mid-August, no evident progress on halting the hostilities has been seen so far.
While in Beijing, Putin once again stressed that Ukraine should not be allowed to join NATO once fighting ends.
Fico reportedly signalled support for the Russian position on NATO membership for Ukraine during his meeting with Putin. The Russian president did not provide further details regarding possible agreement on security guarantees for Ukraine.
Russia has thus far ruled out the deployment of a peacekeeping force from Kiev's Western allies to Ukraine and has instead proposed an arrangement that would give Moscow a veto on security issues.
