Middle-sized and small cities in São Paulo are very nice.
Just went to one a few days ago, Paranapiacaba. Lovely memories, but too many tourists (such as myself). To be fair, it was a weekend, and it doesn't bother me when the tourists include many pretty girls (it's also civilized tourism, mostly for historical train-related stuff).

What's preventing you? Brazilian nature is incredible, indeed.
The violence is mostly reserved to drug gangs (you should be very careful anyway). Cellphone stealing is common, pickpocketing too. In the situation you describe, the biggest risk are probably the snakes and the dengue mosquito.
