The point of the movie is that regardless of his exploits, Barry could never be anything but a fraud. The shit with the kid is legitimately some of the most heartfelt shit of its time, even by Kubrick’s typically cold approach.

The conclusions one draws from it or the thoughts and emotions it inspires are left to the observer. I thought the story worked well as a wistful and nostalgic look at one man's partly heroic, partly tragic life's journey while also offering a fascinating glimpse into 18th century social life with all its mores and idiosyncrasies.
