>work ethic
There is no incentive to work hard in most jobs.
Working hard means inevitably, screwing up more while getting more done. Screwing up more means you get your supervisor coming down on you. And then your other supervisor. And then your group leader or manager or whatever.
So people only work as hard as they need to to not get fired. That's all 99% of workplaces encourage, and "working hard" or "having good work ethic" has never gotten anyone ahead outside of a company that they own.
The only people who believe in this work ethic shit are naive kids and boomers who don't work anymore. I learned a longtime ago that I can show up late, leave early, and dick around most of my day, not pick up extra shifts, etc., and be perfectly fine, and I can watch my coworkers bust their asses and receive nothing in return.
