You can't totally prevent what causes these types of neurodegenerative diseases, but what you can do is delay onset of issues caused by them in many cases for long enough that you die before they impair your life. My grandfather died of dementia and after a while he started fucking crying that he couldn't remember people's faces and names. He was the toughest, blue collar, take-no-shit-from-anyone fisherman and I never saw him cry in my life until he had dementia. How to avoid it? A couple years ago, there was a paper which suggests that dementia came from inflammation of the brain. So my hypothesis is to reduce your chances of getting dementia, you need to reduce your chances of getting inflammation around the brain area. I am guessing that it is slower to collect the waste in the brain and so every time you get inflammation there, the more brain waste gets collected.

Anyway, another paper suggests that Viagra or sildenafil helps the brain clear up this waste and so this medication may also help you reduce your chances of dementia.

I'm too lazy to bring up the papers on my phone, but if you nicely ask for it, I might look later today on my break.

Not much one can do about dementia, not that Bruce is suffering only from that (his case is more extraordinary). However there are cases where people with early onset dementia diagnoses (usually in their 60s) have gotten worse after heavy cortisone treatment, typically given to control CRP in life-threatening situations such as very high fever.

Either way I don't find it sensible to worry about something you can't control. If it happens, it happens. The real question is will you have somebody to take care of you should you end up like Bruce.
