Nato was explicitly a military alliance opposed to the soviet union. The soviet union ceased to exist, we repurposed nato into a military alliance to oppose Russia instead, for no apparent reason. We expanded nato east relentlessly. The final phase was put missiles in Ukraine, 200 miles from moscow. Russia said for 35 years why are you doing this we were willing to get along since 1991. At no point since 1991 did Russia threaten anyone. We didn't stop. Many experts said this serves no purpose and won't end well. Russia may not be a true superpower anymore but it is still an industrial and military behemoth. We just kept going, for no apparent reason. Ukrainians are the victims of our stupid decisions and Putin saying enough is enough, this ends now.

The real concern is how will Ukrainians react when they understand we used them as cannon fodder. Will it become an Al Qaida in Europe but with tanks? That won't be comfy at all.
