Why does /pol/ think 45+ childfree people are unhappy?
I am 45 and never wanted to have children, neither as a choice nor by instinct. The thought or desire is just not there at all.
I hardly feel unhappy about it, just as I would feel about not being able to eat neutrinos.
My pastimes involve playing boardgames with friends, computer games, reading SF books, travelling to Germany and Asia. Of course there are things I am unhappy about like stress at work or renovating my house, but neither marriage or children are something I feel I need. In fact they seem quite awful for me, especially looking at people I know with wife and children.
There are plenty of posts here claiming people without children are depressed or suffer after 40 but I simply don't see that at all.I think people with child having instinct simply can't conceptualise different mind from theirs. I like being alone, I like peace and quiet, I neither desire children not chaos, responsibility or struggle they bring to life.
Before someone asks "oh why do you made this thread then", simply because there are tons of posts claiming I should be depressed about it every day here.

As an old depressed man. I can tell when someone else is depressed. The people who claim they are happy and do performative acts to show their happiness are 100% unhappy.
Children with innocence are about the only happy people on the planet. That is why it is cruel to subject them to the harsh realities of this bizarre world. The only way we can even feel happy as adults are if we are in the presence of children because we absorb their happiness.
The couple that is cleaning the crap out of their child's diapers and watching them like a hawk are more happy than the carefree adults without children. First of all your opinion of this is based on your own observation, which is anecdotal at best, you should take that into account. Your experience and opinion doesn't speak for everyone else. Secondly you have part of your social needs covered by friends and traveling, which maybe is enough for some, like you, but it doesn't apply to everyone. Having loved ones is a whole other thing compared to friends, one can't substitute the other but I guess you can live without one of them. It's not even about social needs, once you start getting older and need help with bunch of stuff then your family should be the main source of help, your fellow 60+ y.o won't help you move, get meds etc etc depending on age. There's a reason why among the elderly main victims of suicide are lone elderly men by far, 'lone' is the keyword.

While the thought of having a cozy family sometimes crosses my mind, there are too many marriages I see going eventually downhill in some regards, like not having sex, starting to disrespect each other. Even those marriages I thought would never fade started to fade. About kids, I don't really like kids, and I think the world is in a shit situation now to put kids in.

In a perfect world I would have a few kids, but I just don't ever see it in the cards for me, and at this point, I really don't care that much. If you don't have children you have a lot of time to waste in your 20s and 30s. It seems great at the time then but it starts to shift once you get into your 40s. Your body will start to slow down, especially when you get to 44. There are moments of realisation, like when your parents or aunts/uncles die that you're not young anymore, that you're old. That once the rest of that generation dies, you're next in line. By the time you're in your 50s you'll have realised that pissing away many years on childish things like video games wasn't really worth it. That you could've done something with your life.

A good friend of mine that I knew for 15+ years, he's a typical millennial, soi beard, muh vidya, black wedding ring, all of that. He married a woman a few years younger than him he met at the tail end of college. She's 39 now, they have no children. I am 43 and have worked hard to turn my 10 acre property into something that will be as self sustaining as possible into the future. I bought gold hand over first when it was 1000 dollars an ounce. I saw it coming years ago and am pretty much a full blown married doomsday prepper. She didn't get off birth control until her early 30s and now we are finding we cannot carry to term. I have buried a few sacs by an apple tree in the past year alone. It's pretty brutal. To work and plan for the future, only someday you will be gone and there will be nobody to pass it all along to. Not just your stuff, but your experience. If I had to guess, I'd say you are some nihilistic apartment dweller or something similar where you really haven't built much up in your life at all.

Am I unhappy? Not really. But there is definitely something missing. I drink a little, that helps until my wife starts noticing it.

Anyway my advice is just to have children as young as you are able with someone you love. Even if you don't stay with them, your life usually ends up fine unless you have no ambition.

That's where I'm at right now. I've been working a good job since I was 20. I mostly dated professional and intelligent women who always wanted a career and money over kids (these women eventually divorced). The other women I dated were low IQ, unmotivated dependents who shared these poor modern day values. There really isn't much to choose from these days.

Most of the men in my family and at work were eventually destroyed by divorce. They lost everything, including their kids. I'm in my early 40's now and I'm sitting on $4.5M precisely because I didn't get married. So this leaves me in a position where I can't take any risks because I'm tired of working and I'm about to retire.

Unlike most men, I enjoy being alone. Not being in a relationship for the past 6 years has given me such peace of mind. No more nagging or doing endless favors for someone who doesn't reciprocate.

However, I still feel like I blew it by not having kids. I don't really enjoy vidya or other hobbies. I find most of it to be soulless and boring.
