This NOT Communism.
Back in the day, Sukarno was faced with what might seem like an impossible task: maintaining a balance between the Communists and the conservative Muslims in Indonesia, among other things. If you remember, the Indonesian Communist party was the second(?) largest in the world at the time, and wished to make change through legal means, such as voting. If you also remember, most Muslims are Southeast Asian, with Indonesia being the largest(?) predominantly Muslim country.
Many did not consider Sukarno a true Communist, but appreciated what he was able to accomplish, and why he seemed to stradle the line. Unfortunately, the successes in Indonesia seemed to cause fear or uncertainty in certain other global players. The rest is a tragedy...
