Has anybody here read this book? It is absolutely wild.

The main thesis and premise is essentially:

If all of this book is truly true, then it's a shame. I've always known that a lot of this music was manufactured stuff that is left-wing propaganda, but it never really stopped me from enjoying the jams and grooves. But I think this book just sucked all the fun out of all music that is even remotely mainstream.

I've never read the book, but I caught a couple interviews of David McGowan shortly before he died. His work is mind-blowing for sure.

Why should that suck the fun out of music? Good music, pretty much without exception, has always been the product of wealthy families who could afford to pay for their children to receive musical instruction. Sure, people played in folk bands and church groups and in the military, but the real creative forces were always the higher level wealthy noble families, this is nothing new.

Personally, I'd love to see a similar book exploring the origins of jazz in the late 1800s/early 1900s, although I imagine it might be harder to track things historically.

All that being said, just look at classical music. Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Puccini, Brahms, Handel, and on and on, all of these guys had extreme wealth backing them up, and they wrote beautiful music that has stuck with us to this day.

In order to write good music you need a lot of time to sit around being idle and to think of new forms, melodies, or rhythms.

There were definitely a lot of psyops in the 60s and 70s rock music scene, but it's not all mind control. However, a lot more of it is just rich people.

Anyway though OP, here's someone who wasn't rich, Janis Joplin. She grew up dirt poor in Texas and then moved to California as a teenager or in her early 20s. She was authentic, and there are plenty of other musicians like her.

Alan Trist helped introduce the band members to each other, at least some of them, and his Dad was the guy who started the Tavistock Institute.
