Not sure about chipmunks (ground squirrels) but red squirrels, fox squirrels, and grey squirrels have been knowing for killing and eating baby birds for a long time. Especially red ones.

When I was young I had a pet ferret. One day i came home and the house looked like a crime scene, blood everywhere.
Raccoons (2 of the fuckers) ripped a window screen and broke into the house, killed and ate 90% of my ferret. She put up a good fight, even though it was 2 against one, she fought, and bled in 3 rooms of the house. I spotted the murder suspects as they tried to escape, but the first one got stuck in the screen because it was fat, full of ferret. This gave me time to grab my rifle and shoot the bastards.

They use to knock on the screen door for them. Then I bought a bag of peanuts online and they don't come to the door anymore.
They will still eat them if I throw them in the grass, but they won't eat them from the deck anymore.
