Systemic Austerity for the welfare state IS the proper response though. This is a problem created exclusively by the public.
In all major welfare states besides Canada, the programs are funded by taxes on "small" contributions from everyone on basic transactions like a paycheck or administrative fees. These are tuned based on how many expected dependants you have vs how many workers. So good so far right?
Well the voters have failed to do anything about the workforce side of the equation declining for DECADES. They could've increased taxes on themselves, raised the retirement age, changed who could access it, actually have children, etc. They did fucking nothing and shouted about how they actually deserve more.
Now the system isn't functioning and the exact people getting punished are the ones who did the most to destroy it. The boomers. Especially Euro boomers who often didn't have kids and fueled this entire invasion over those very pensions.
They could've done so much to avoid this. And the issues were raised, as a normal political matter. They made the conscious decisions to delay and ignore the problems or even make them worse.
