>Why are they so close to each other?
People typically don't use their side yards for much, so they put the houses close together laterally to fit as many as they can into the plot of land, while also giving each house a reasonable front and back yard.
This looks to be a relatively low priced subdivision, the next step up from people who want to move out of an apartment or duplex.
>Why they all look the same?
They aren't. There are quite a few different floorplans in that picture. The houses are painted a similar or same color and have the same type of roof because they were probably all built by one development company and they chose those colors because they are relatively neutral and inoffensive.
>Why no trees?
It's a relatively new development that was probably built on an old cow pasture or something like that, in some hot, dry, flat state that doesn't have a lot of tree coverage in general. There are a few trees planted in several of the yards, they just haven't grown very large because they're still young.
