Your definitions are wrong. Saying homos should be homos in private is not even close to puritanical. It was pretty much the standard everywhere in the West (and East for that matter) unless it was punished more harshly. In France homosexuality wasn't punished since Napoleon, in Poland it wasn't punished, in pre-WW2 England it wasn't punished (this changed after the war as war makes people more right-wing; a notable case was that of Turing), etc. None of these societies were puritanical. As I've said above, it's a simple matter: if someone engages in stuff that is mega disgusting to 99% of other people of his gender, then that someone should keep that thing private. It's basic decency.
