Used to work with this young bloke, maybe 20-ish, from Singapore. He was an electrical fitter, and his girlfriend or wife was off doing some pharma PhD. The job we were on wasn’t your usual switchboards and conduit – some of it needed NV1/NV2 clearance because of the contracts. He was on a temporary sponsorship clearance while his full vetting went through.
Now, he was very openly pro-China. Taiwan is China, yada yada. Didn’t hide it either. Rules on site were crystal clear: no photos of schematics, ever. That stuff’s locked down tighter than a pokies machine at 3am.
One day, I see him blatantly snapping photos of schematics. Reported it up the chain. My manager went to the big boss, who basically shrugged and said, “Oh well.” Thought I was seeing things? Nope – three weeks later, after his holiday back to Singapore, he did it again. I pulled the same move, reported it, and the same circus played out: nothing happened.
Our floor manager, trying to lighten the situation, started joking about him flogging secrets. The Singapore bloke didn’t find it funny lodged a complaint, called us racist. Next thing you know, me and the floor manager are dragged in for “cultural awareness” talks and had to re-do our interviews with the spooks for clearance. we told them exactly what I saw. They were not amused.
Not long after, our company lost a contract with another government agency. First ones out the door? Me and the floor manager. Meanwhile, Mr. Singapore packed up and left for home before the end of the year, in a suspiciously big hurry just as the spooks started sniffing around properly.china 100% knows the electrical capability of our new frigates. not through some james bond shit, just because some working visa intern with temp clearance took a cheeky iphone snap of the schematics and sent it to his “cousin.” while ausdef treats it like crown jewels, xi jinping’s probably got the powerpoint before the shipyard foreman even knows
