He didn't want to believe it was true. There are varying shades of liberal/leftist, but they all believe that the vast majority of other lib/left people are just like them.

Antifa thinks that 99% of dems are antifa too, but just too lazy or cowardly to go protest. Pro-Israel democrats think that most liberals love Israel, and it's just a tiny minority that dislikes Israel.
