in my city, 1500/mo gets you a place you an apartment that's fine but hasn't been updated in over a decade. so called luxury apartments are 2500/mo and have been increasingly filling with undesirables. even if you stash 2000/mo in savings for a home, market prices are climbing too quickly for it to make a difference. if you want a worthwhile home that doesn't require a ton of work, you're looking at minimum 350k, and at 6% interest rates, unless you're sitting at home all month and dumping every surplus penny into your mortgage, you're paying a boatload of extra money to the bank. it's a usurer's paradise right now.
