As I pass through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market-Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

...

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew,
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four—
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man—
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began:—
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

The full poem is absolutely worth a read, and is some of Kipling's best work: The_Gods_of_the_Copybook_Headings

The idea is to make it some kind of violation for international corporations to do things like owning all the food production in a country or continuing to export food during famines.

Monsanto and similar firms make a lot of money by taking over the food production of a country in various ways. When any local action is taken to do something about this, the country gets sanctioned for violating international business arrangements.

This is like selling your people into slavery and then whining to the UN to save you from slavery.
Maybe countries that are whining about it can send their own food. Oh wait, that won't work because those countries will just make more short sighted decisions.
Let's just make the whole world brown people proof and make everything free to protect them from the consequences of their own actions, until they multiply enough to drain all the resources.

No. They are trying to argue that Monsanto should not own all the seeds and outlaw unregistered seeds. They are arguing that they should be able to grow their own food instead of be forced into IMF generated debt slavery requiring them to transfer production away from local food towards whatever bullshit widget the US wants them to produce so the financial system and silicon valley can scrape the cream off the top. They want to depend LESS on US food and more on local production.

The US doesn’t want to make food a right because then a sovereign nation could argue against IMF austerity terms, which will harm US corporate interests. Israel doesn’t want to make food a right because then they can’t genocide Gaza.

Positive rights vs negative rights. Only negative rights (such and such shall not be done) are universally enforceable.
Otherwise, say food is a right, that means that humanity is obliged to make sure there is food for anyone, anywhere, anytime, at other's expense. It's unworkable and immoral.

If it's like anything to do with slavery it's like the people who were sold asking for help.

Earlier governments sold people into slavery, specifically debt slavery in the capitalist world system, and current governments are figuring out that this was not even a good deal for the elites of the country that did it. The people who did the selling aren't involved anymore, and they're only a fraction of a percent compared to the people who were sold.

When you try to destroy a resolution for food justice one thing you can do is load it up with more wishful demands so it won't get passed. And then if it ever does get passed they can try and make sure Monsanto will get the contract to actually provide food security, so they can continue their current policies.

The basic core of this whole 'food is a right' movement is a reaction against Monsanto and similar companies and how they've fucked us all over when it comes to food production for decades.

Eh, right to an attorney is evening the playing field in a system governments themselves created. If governments have the money to pay judges and prosecutors, they should have money to pay for your defense. If the court system collapses it's moot. I see it as protection, a right to not get absolutely steamrolled in court by throwing money at you and making the courts too complex to navigate.
If the court system collapses and governments no longer have resources for it, it becomes moot. Meanwhile if the food system collapses, you still need food but it's not going to manifest out of thin air.

>Which shit did they sell?
As I mentioned, farm land and food rights.
I would venture to say that every country on earth has government controlled land they can sell as farm land and food rights they can sell. It's not necessarily owned by other people. If they sold other people's land or food rights people were already using without compensation, that's a different story.
You have a case for misrepresentation of the populous in government. I would be much more inclined to accept the right of people not to be misrepresented by government. Right to a resource that is not always going to be available makes no sense.
>>514802256
>What if a corporation is doing it's best to make sure that it's impossible for you to make your own food?
I would question how they obtained those rights and why the government is failing to take them back. I would rather do that than make some kind of nebulous right to a resource that is not always going to be available.
I'm not saying you shouldn't have access to food, I'm just pointing out how this is doing it in a way that attacks a symptom of a deeper problem of corruption and ineptitude in government, probably isn't going to solve anything, and in fact is probably going to create more problems.

They sold other peoples farm land and food rights though. The government imposes taxes on farmers so they have to sell up, and then they subsidize the farming corporations that move in. This 'proves' that big farming corporations are more efficient, since they were able to survive in this 'free market'.

>I would question how they obtained those rights and why the government is failing to take them back. I would rather do that than make some kind of nebulous right to a resource that is not always going to be available.

When governments try to take them back, the first thing is the opposition is funded to win elections, the second thing is they get bribed or blackmailed to not do it, the third thing is targeted assassinations, and the fourth thing is the country gets invaded. This is obvious enough now that there is at least some kind of unified movement to sidestep it and tackle the issue at the core.

>I'm not saying you shouldn't have access to food, I'm just pointing out how this is doing it in a way that attacks a symptom of a deeper problem of corruption and ineptitude in government, probably isn't going to solve anything, and in fact is probably going to create more problems.

So what happens when your right/privilege to work and get food, housing, and education is under attack?

People will say it's fine to destroy those things or jack up prices, because you don't have a 'right' to them, but they do have a 'right' to set whatever prices they like once they've already gained control over them. And then the response will use language like 'we DO have a right to them' since the initial attack was framed as 'we DO have a right to control them'.

Again I support people's rights to be represented by their governments, that means I would support anything that allows for getting money and foreign influences out of politics.
This even means that I would support any means necessary to get Monsanto out of any countries they've effectively taken over and remove any governments that are denying people their food.
What I don't support is right to a resource that's not always available, not because I don't believe it would be nice, but because I believe it's literally impossible to provide that resource sometimes and it will cause complications, including justification of depriving others of their liberties.
>You are saying Monsanto or similar should control who has access to it.
This is just reductive. What do you hope to achieve by misrepresenting and trivializing everything I've said? I'm sure you believe this is what I'm effectively saying but this is just refusing to engage on any of the finer points I've said and aggressively reiterating your point. You won't convince anyone by doing this.

The reason the language used is 'rights' is because the language used to destroy local food production was that people had a 'right' to buy every essential element.

What they WANT is to have the opportunity to grow their own food. They lost this because their governments and the international community supported the 'right' to buy every essential element of growing food out from under them. Even when it was very clearly the result of governments being paid off to undermine local farmers, this was all put down to 'bad governance' or even farmers being too stupid to stay ahead of it, but the right to keep owning these ill-gotten gains was upheld as beyond reproach.

It happens under the thing that people keep calling capitalism. Any attempt to either actually get a 'free market' or to improve the allocation that is being decided by big corporations is called 'communism'.

Like, why are faggots such faggots?

Maybe you want to feed the homeboys in the ghetto rather than not but when there's droughts in Africa maybe you have to accept that that's how things are sometimes and maybe you want to mitigate problems where it makes sense and is workable but mostly I'd rather see a focus on giving young men a stake in the system before things get out of hand

USA accounts for 60% of all the world's food.
Making food a human right means USA would just be forced to farm for every other country.

>means for its procurement

The main purpose of this resolution was targeting monsantos global monopoly on seed crops. Fun fact, you are NOT allowed to replant seeds purchased from Monsanto, they can and will prosecute you and raked in millions doing so. Monsantos agreement also says you agree to their contract simply by opening a bag of their seeds. Not that specific bag, ANY bags at any time and it’s retroactive.

I'm trying to understand how this would even be logistically possible. Are the governments going to be paying for the increasing costs of fertilizer?
