Dusseldorf – The state election officer in North Rhine-Westphalia reports further deceased candidates for the local elections on September 14. She is now aware of 16 deaths.
The first deaths of local politicians caused a stir nationwide and sparked some bizarre conspiracy theories online. Initially, four, later seven, had been reported dead. AfD -politicians had been mentioned. However, a BILD investigation with the local police revealed that they died of natural causes.
Report now North Rhine-Westphalia State Election Director Monika Wißmann announced that she is now aware of 16 candidate deaths. Despite online speculation that a particularly large number of AfD candidates might be affected, there is no evidence of a significantly increased number of deaths. Of the 16 deaths recorded so far, seven involve the AfD and one each the SPD , the Social and Democratic Alternative (SDA), FDP, Greens, the Animal Protection Party, the Independent Voters’ Association (UWG), Free Voters, the Referendum Party and a voters’ group.
The cases affect 14 different municipalities: Altena, Bad Lippspringe, Bad Münstereifel, Blomberg, Essen, Hellenthal, Krefeld, Märkischer Kreis, Much, Remscheid, Rheinberg, Schwerte, Solingen and Wuppertal.

Online, hints from individual AfD politicians, among others, had fueled speculation about the deaths of AfD candidates. In the four cases first reported in Rheinberg, Schwerte, Blomberg, and Bad Lippspringe, police had already ruled out unnatural causes of death or foul play.
Given the long period between the nomination of candidates and the election, the Municipal Elections Act provides for the possibility of a by-election if a candidate dies before election day. Such a by-election can, if time permits, also be held on the day of the actual municipal elections.
In the 2020 local elections, more than 20,000 seats were awarded in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 2024, approximately 220,000 people died in North Rhine-Westphalia, an average of 603 per day.

The expected death rate, given a population of 20 000 politicians and the same death rate as the North Rhine-Westphalia average, is two politicians every three days.

An assassination program aimed at wiping out a single party would be expected to target leaders and major donors, not just randos. We'd also expect anyone who kills sixteen successfully to have BOTCHED some of the kills, but we aren't getting reports of botched assassinations.

My guess is that this is just people who don't have a good mental grasp of numbers memeing themselves into schizoland. If it IS an AfD-targeting assassination campaign, I think it's an internal power struggle like the time redice provided transport to assassinate a PS politician in retaliation for him getting a criminal kicked out of the party.
