Finnish conscripts were given an objective to do in a war game where the unit standing in as opfor was an elite unit and they accomplished the objective. Most of the time the opposition just acts as guards without any intelligence about the attacker and they just stand there.

Same thing with jets in exercises. 90% of the time, they're not mock engagements where it's like a PVP lobby in a videogame and then a deathmatch. One side has objectives, the other side play the opposition, and they do the exercise. Usually one side is attacker and they have objectives and advantages given to them over the side that's set up as defender. It's not a wargame like in the movies or topgun. It's not like CoD but IRL. Usually sides take turns...

exercises focus on one unit accomplishing it's goals. They're not mock engagements so much as they're a chance for units to familiarize themselves with their doctrine and practice getting it working against a force standing is as a scaled down opposing force. Say you paid for blackwater to give you special forces training... Part of the exercises, your instructors would let you run through all the motions and familiarize yourself with what you've been taught while they play the badguys. It'd be silly to go around talking about how you're a better operator than your instructor after doing an exercise where the focus was to train YOU. But to be honest, the US Rangers and SOF are clueless about the arctic warfare. Their ARs get frozen and stop working, while the AK based Valmet works with the "lock and load". The SAS have the same treatment, although I respect the SAS beyond belief.

My uneducated guess is that it all evens out in specialized circumstances. This is why they train here. They're learning from us. It won't be long until this is even. We learn a lot from the US SOF and UK SOF. Nothing to be ashamed of here.

Regardless if they "lost" in Cold Response, The US always deliver and are top notch. I am pretty sure that if we had Warm Response out in the middle of Nevada at 120 degerees, The US would win by far.
The whole point of Cold Respnse is to test soldiers to the limit in extreme cold conditions, and its pure logic that people that live in these shitty cold as parts of the world are more used to this than Americans.
They just had a exercise in Norway (and its still going on) where US Military is a part of it, and The Americans deliver bigtime as they always do.

We can joke as much as we want about US Military, but they are really good at what they do within all branches of military.
