That's a great way of looking at it OP. The way I look at it is that since everyone intuitively understands the dollar is going to continually diminish in value forever, they desperately seek something stable to store their wealth in, such as land. Obviously a capitalist economy with diverse flows of cash can't work in a situation where everyone is trying to avoid having any cash. But the idea that the system is rigged so that real estate value must always go up, since everyone has their life savings in it, is also a great way of looking at it.

No, they legitimately have huge problems, it's just that they're problems that can functionally been ignored because the country and the government keep making money. China is, very literally, losing HUGE amounts of land every year to erosion and flooding, their entire interior is nothing but rivers and dirt mountains that are either in a state of flooding or landsliding and taking out old rural towns all the time. They're in a very real farmland crisis that isn't getting better. But they're trying to just build and build and build their way out of it by creating bigger and more ridiculous shit to offset this stuff with more power generation, because that's profitable.

The depression, the dust bowl, huge exploitation of the lower classes in the late 19th and early 20th century. That's where we were at at the beginning of WW2. In that picture you can still see tracks from large vehicles, portacabins. The facade on the bottom of the buildings looks unfinished. As does the road, it's brown dirt.

So what I was told by my cousin (who lived there for like 5 years) was that the "China is collapsing!" people just use footage and pictures places that still aren't 100% finished to say look: this place is abandoned!
