This, but the potential for making the US population averse to a universal health care system, "free" at the point of contact, has always been fought with other political baggage.
Namely, the side of the aisle that is always advocating for a universal health care system always ruins it by talking about how much they care about
>women's rights
>transgender types
>blacks and browns
>immigrants
>the lgbtqia+ whatever
>diversity, equity, inclusion
Etc.
All of that is toxic for the other side of the aisle. If they could just bring themselves to STOP talking about race, gender, and identity and just focus on the merits of the actual policy, they might be able to win some political struggle.
But, no!
They always have to include that toxic rhetoric all about their niche boutique bullshit.
I think this is by design, by the way. The left side of the aisle has been poisoned with idpol specifically to make them look more concerned about a niche cause that affects 15 percent or less of the population than the majority if the population. It's to make them look frivolous.
This is similar to how the Pentagon and the CIA made the anti Vietnam War protests look toxic:
they promoted drugs, free love, and the hippie counter culture in order to make the anti Vietnam war protests look disgusting and unpatriotic to average Americans.
