Someone who has dated over 5 women in China on LDR here.
This propaganda fails spectacularly when you've dated several women from China in an LDR. I understand the need for propaganda, however my ex gf was waltzing home at 1am, alone, drunk and I wasn't that worried cause it's safe.
To balance that, my other ex told me on WeChat that Chinese surveillance "isn't that bad" and I had to point out that "it is bad compared to where I live" So they are normalised to super surveillance
It's really annoying running into posts like this when I've had personal experience that tells me it's either a lie or delusion or propaganda, but I must be patient. I got the impression from them it's safe and there is community, but the government absolutely has a monopoly on the narrative and surveillance, and if you challenge them you'll get a knock on the door, then if you persist, they'll make you disappear probably into some unmarked grave
Chinese even in China are way more open than you'd expect, they're used to the surveillance to the point they don't notice it much which is probably bad cause they've normalised no privacy. One girl I chatted was in her uni class at like 12am doing studies and cursed about the control or whatever when I asked if there's really microphone hanging from the ceiling
Long story short, that sort of society has downsides and upsides, the upside is safety, the downside is mass surveillance and a government who owns a massive chunk of the populations minds
