Nukes are real but they are far over estimated. Look at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, they were basically fine 20 years after a supposed world ending bomb was dropped. While atomic bombs do exist and cause lasting damage, they are not quite the level of destruction descent in Media. It takes many Years to recover but it is very possible.
