The six million number exists to justify the existence of the state of Israel. It has to be 6 million specifically because of their religious numerology. That's why they won't even concede that it could have been only 5,999,999.
What actually matters today isn't necessarily delving into the esoteric specifics of whether it happened and how many, but rather just denying their victim complex and their right to self-determination.

Gradually the story of the holocaust has shifted away from the death camps and to the killings by the Einsatzgruppen.
To summarize, the Germans didn't actually care about Poland at all. They wanted to invade the Soviet Union, that's what this whole war was about, destroying communism. The problem they faced was this shitty little country called Poland in their way, obstructing their access to the Soviet border. They were also harassing German troops and supply chains from the rear as they marched into the Soviet territory.
The job of the Einsatzgruppen was to put a stop to that. They were quite brutal, but their entire job was to quell any resistance, sabotage, or interferance with the march eastward by the Polish. They executed people, and tracked down saboteurs and dissidents. Communist party officials were executed on sight.
There is a claim that they were given a "secret verbal order" to kill every jew they found. But there's really no evidence for that claim. The claim is they killed 1.1 million jews all together, or perhaps more if the narrative demands it.
It could also be the case that a bunch of the saboteurs and communist party officials....just happened to be jews.
