Why dont men repair their shit anymore?
Is unironically due to low T from all the gooning to midgetporn?

Are men slowly turning into homo-erotic dancers from all the fat overweight truckers they suck off?

What is their deal?

Are people infact, retarded?

They didnโ€™t have dads to teach them, anon.
Iโ€™m 51, my skills are limited because my dad worked 12 hour days as an insurance manager and we didnโ€™t have a lot of time where he showed me how to fix shit, Most of what I learned was after learning basic tool usage (mostly from assembling bikes/skateboards and building ramps), but beyond simple things, I contract out because I donโ€™t wanna fuck up a major project.
Now, imagine these 20-30 year olds who had parents who learned even less than I did, they canโ€™t even hook up a television, theyโ€™re fucked.

Couple things. Lots of stuff is cheap garbage made to break down with repairs being way more time, effort and money than simply replacing it. Most vehicles made within the last 10 years at least are purposely made extremely difficult to do DIY repairs on. For instance, I have a โ€˜20 1 ton diesel ram and, despite there being a veritable shitload of room under the hood and under the motor, they decided to mount the oil filter in the front passenger wheel well right next to the spring, completely inaccessible from below and only accessible from the side via a special tool.

I know a lot of guys grew up with single moms or whatever and were never taught how to do anything, but even for someone like me who prefers to do that stuff, it gets harder and harder as time goes on because manufacturers do everything they can to discourage home maintenance of stuff.

Also the plastic from the oil bottle almost went in where the oil goes. Otherwise job well done. Spilled oil everywhere but oh well not my problem. Need to go recycle the oil at advance on my way to wage slavery.

Also this. 2015 tundra is reliable as fuck but just look up replacing a headlight bulb. You need to remove a body panel under the light, the headlight housing itself, the front fender, then there is a tough rubber grommet held down by a metal clip that you have to finger under the rubber to loosen the clip. LITERALLY WHAT THE FUCK. Its not hard but extremely unnecessary.

You have to use what you have.
If you want to flex on someone, show a user-made tool you created for a specific purpose.
Extra points if you created it out of broken tools you salvaged.

>More and more shit is not repairable.
There is truth to this.
Designed obsolescence is a thing, though not a formal policy as far as I know.
The way to combat this is to buy things that can be repaired - are designed for that - even if you have to repair it to begin with in order to use it.
Example:
Our power grid is a suggestion. So, I turned to kerosene lanterns as auxiliary lighting and heating (they put out some heat - really).
But the chinky shit they sell anymore isn't worth buying. It's worse than useless because it promises something and delivers nothing.
The German lanterns are pricey, so I got some of those, but they do not last all that long on a tankful.
So, I got some old German lanterns - the big yellow fuckers they made for the railroad that will run for days on one tankful of kerosene.
But they have not made them for decades and new old stock doesn't exist.
So, you buy the beat up used stuff, mend them, paint them, put them back into working order and back into circulation they go.
>They've turned life into a disposable commodity.
Subscription service, but yeah. Point taken.

Thereโ€™s an ocean of difference between reading how to ride a bike, watching YouTubeโ€™s, and actually climbing in a bike and having your dad work with you to learn.
One way cements the feelings, understanding, subtle psychological signals and inputs into your subconscious. The other does not. There is no substitute for living and experiencing something. Knowledge can be learned and applied from books or a YouTube video, but it is necessary to have all of the inputs as well as a budget to handle the inevitable fuck ups during the learning process.
Thatโ€™s why a professional is a professional. He doesnโ€™t he to learned, he already knows what heโ€™s doing by virtue of the experience and output heโ€™s generated.

Most normies are clueless, yes. But it is not their nature - they were created through excess and dependency
I am reminded of what the ruling class did with their kids in the deeps of history: because they knew their kids would grow up to be spoiled, insufferable fuckheads if they were given a life of leisure they would throw their kids to a bunch of handlers who would treat them like shit and teach them things...
As I recall, I think it might have been King Darius who had to kill a male lion in single combat before he was allowed to return home

I haven't worked there in years, but by far my favorite part was when I was done in the warehouse I'd sneak off to the workshop to fix or improve some of the items. I made a shit ton of really nice wall mirrors by converting vanity and dresser mirrors that had lost their matches. Or modifying pieces that had been on the shelf forever in hopes someone would take it then.
Was incredibly satisfying to see a client choose a piece I personally had refinished.
I agree, these people are spoiled and essentially worthless space thieves. I think the underlying commonality is the complete and total absence of any sort of intellectual curiosity. Which i dont need to do math or know the tools needed as the battery alone i can look up is $80-$100. Meaning he either is working for free, or gets the batteries and parts in bulk then replaces them for very little profit. Buying in bulk is another 100s of dollars. Repair shop, etc etc. its excessive and time consuming for cheap computer tech thats easier and cheaper to throw away. USA made computer companies should try to "innovate" and compete with chinkware by going for long lasting, repairable, modular, swappable, fixable designs. It touch back to good ol days americanism. Nice. That must have been very satisfying. Worthy of reward.
Here: wood finish I make here at home. Maybe you can use it.
>1/4 part Tung oil
>1/4 part Tru oil
>1/4 Linseed oil
>1/4 part Jap drier
You can also color linseed oil by using alkanet root.
That's some genuine centuries-old knowledge there.
Take an old clean Ball jar with lid and seal.
Fill with plain linseed oil
Add in about a handful of alkanet root - not the powdered stuff. The shredded looking stuff.
Put the lid on and set it aside.
Over time, it will go a rose color, then it will go red, then dark wine color
When it gets to the color of red you like, pour the contents through a coffee filter into a clean Ball jar and put the lid on.
Add it to your wood finish for a reddish tint without the use of industrial dyes. Especially Cherry wood - it gives it a real pop.

Only indicator I have of a warm car is the "cold coolant" light goes off. My intention is to drive around until the thermostat opens but I dont know when that happens. The specs say a particular number but, again, cant do nothing with that. Im afraid of running the engine too hot at that point and cooking the gaskets or something

>I fixed a major crack in my Argentine Mauser recently. The crack was bad enough to justify 4 brass rods
Nice.
Military stocks are notorious
They would take them by the dozens and plunge them into huge vats of linseed oil
That oil goes all the way to the heart of the stock
You can't use acraglas or anything like that to repair it - it won't stick to oil
Even if you use whitening and acetone mix to get the surface oil out, it will still leach back and undermine the repair compound
I approve of the brass rods - it's better to fix it mechanically like that and you really can't put a stock bolt in there.

It only seemed to work if I was driving quickly, lower speeds or in traffic I'd have to pull over to let it cool.

much crap is designed now to be thrown away. One could fix even TVs without much knowledge if a resistor or a capacitor was burned. Just a normal hot gun. Now all TVs have 2 boards, power and digital and even if is not some heavily integrated shit, you'll need a soldering station. I see a lot of jeet videos though where they just strap the defective piece and hope it will work until it burns thorugh their pocket. Saw them repairing led bulbs, which is the fuckiest crapiest "green" thing ever designed with leds burning out even on known brands, let alone each one having an AC/DC transformer and converter inside the base. And still costs 10x a regular 100 year old bulb design (used to be 40x). With shittier light quality too.

>Great, now possess all the tools in existence
How far do you want to move this goal post exactly? I was arguing that the assertion that
>"cheaper to hire someone one time"
Was a stupid argument. I've been in plenty of repair/replace situations where I had to decide between buying the tools myself or paying someone else to do the work with the tools they have. And I didn't choose to buy the tool in every circumstance, but I chose it in the majority where buying and owning the tool was a much better way to spend that money.

Automotive and small engine repair isn't really as difficult or expensive to do yourself and the number of tools ACTUALLY required for it doesn't require as much of an investment as people tend to claim or assume. And you don't buy all of them at one time either.

For future reference you can thin Acragas with light heat from a hairdryer. This will create a watery consistency in the epoxy and then you can literally inject it with a hypodermic needle into the crack. The thin consistency will enable the epoxy to wick deep into the crack far better than any glue or jb weld could ever do. Keep in mind it will begin curing fast after the heating so get that epoxy in the crack and then rap the stock with surgical tubing so it can create a strong bond. And if oil is a concern within the crack boundary, flex the crack lightly to open it up and then inject acetone into it. You will have to do this a lot granted it works very well. I have repaired two destroyed stocks this way and both are solid as can be, plus they do not have a real outward appearance that they have had repairs beyond some wood dowels stakes that have a slightly different grain pattern. With historical pieces always try to have that leave no trace kind of mentality with repairs anon. And if you would like some great resources for further repairs and conservation check out mark Novak, that mans a host of great information on this matter.

Usually people who are in that particular car situation are people who can't just go buy a car at 400 a month plus full coverage insurance as dictated by the creditor who enables a person to buy the car.

What phone? I work in a phone repair shop and I like to know other places labor rates. We want 80 to 100 profit on a repair. No phone battery I have ever seen is 80-100 cost.. The expensive ones are like 40-50 for new OEM apple on new release models. Average phone battery is like 10-20 dollars from b2b suppliers. Bulk discounts aren't really a thing that I have seen unless maybe your guy buys hundred at a time. He would have a line out the door to have that kind of frequency. I'm not saying he's giving you a bad price, they guy has expenses just to allow people to show up at a known location let alone part costs and the hassle to customer interactions. It all depends on 100 little factors.

I just use YouTube for everything.

My dad had no idea how to fix a single fucking thing. He always hired a handyman because my grandfather "repaired" everything and my dad hated growing up in a house where everything was this amateur repair job.

So I had to learn all this myself. The thing is, you never know what you are capable of doing until you try it. I think a lot of people just tell themselves "Oh I can't do that" and just default to calling someone.
But I have way better resources than my grandad did in terms of learning. I can learn how to fix almost anything given the time to do it.

Or don't want to afford it. I have the money but drive a 2012 chrysler shitbox 200. It;s just cheaper to fix until it needs and engine replacement. 1 year of payments at about 400 a month is more than the occasional 300 dollar repair. One year I put in 1700 for brakes and exhaust work, got a year out of it longer and therefore it was worth it. Now it needs more work in the suspension and will probably cost less than 1 year of payments on a new car. There is no equity to be had in a new car.
