Japan was created by Izanami and Izanagi.

They wanted children. Izanagi let Izanami go first in the marriage ritual and the children were deformed in return. After talking to the other gods, they figured out the problem was they have to adhere to the Male gender and let the Male go first. They performed the marriage ritual again this time Izanagi, the male, went first and everything worked, they had good children but sadly one of them was Kagutsuchi god of fire and killed the mother, Izanami.

Izanami went to the land of Yomi after death (which is a real place in Japan, common theme with Japanese mythology) and ate the Fruit of Yomi, tying herself to Yomi.

Izanagi chased after Izanami after her death and went to Yomi to save her, but he couldn't break the bond created by the Fruit of Yomi and , as a result, Izanami no Mikoto looked like a corpse. This scared Izanagi, so he escaped and blocked Yomi.

Izanagi cleaned himself of what happened in Yomi using sacred water, and the Three Precious Children were born: Amaterasu, Susano'o, and Tsukuyomi.

Amaterasu was given control over Japan. Then the Kojiki talks a lot about what the gods did in Japan before it gets to the "Modern" Emperors. Emperor Jimmu is the most important emperor as he's the first emperor and a direct descendant.

Go read the Kojiki. There's a lot of fun stories in it, especially Jimmu's lore.

Do some research on the Imperial family, either by reading the Kojiki or just studying the modern-day emperors.

America did deal a blow to the Throne by having them claim their connection to Amaterasu Omikami doesn't make them a god, but they could revoke this at any time. The fact is they DIDN'T say they WEREN'T a descendant of Amaterasu, only merely that connection doesn't mean they're divine.

In the meantime, the Emperor is still the head of Shinto carrying on the island's religion for over 2,600 years.
